Cricket, arguably, is the true national game for India. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is a Test cricket series played between exceptional countries, India and Australia. It is currently played via the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) future tours program. The series is named after Australia’s Allan Border and India’s Sunil Gavaskar, both of whom have scored over 10,000 Test runs in their career. Both of them have been captains of respective teams, and were also the world record holders for most runs scored in Test match cricket.
On 7 January 2019. the Indian Cricket team won one of the greatest test series, a win that had not occurred in ages. India finally ended a 71 year old wait to win their first test series in Australia. The Indian Cricket team captain, Virat Kohli, has become the first ever Indian captain to lead India to a test series victory on Australian land. Australia beat India in all the test matches since 1947 until this match where India beat Australia by 2-1. A partnership that worked and Australia were sunk. In total. India has toured Australia 12 times and finally managed to lift the Test Series Trophy under Kohli’s captaincy.
Test cricket is the longest form of the sport and is considered to be of highest standard. Two teams of 11 players each, play a four innings match which may also go up to 5 days. It is considered to be the most accurate examination of a team’s ability and endurance. A Test match is a test of both mental and physical strength of the teams. Initially. test matches were conducted only during the day but since 2012. the ICC permitted Test matches to be conducted during day and night. The format for all kinds of test matches are the same. except that of women’s cricket where their format is slightly different. The luxury of playing a Test match is only given to teams that play exceptionally well on the field and have good continuous record. Till now, only 12 countries have been given Test Status and India is one among them.
Australia is not a team that loses often at home and elsewhere either, for that matter. This is evident from their team record. However, Australia’s test record is taking a battering off late with its 6th consecutive test defeat. But no weather condition or team could stop India from winning the test series. Pujara did not leave a single stone unturned to send the Australians on a lethal hunt. The batsman was the highest run scorer in the four match series with 521 runs in 7 innings, including 3 centuries to his name. With highest score of 193, Pujara reclaimed the tag of ‘The Indian Wall’. He was awarded the Man of the Match and Man of the Series trophies.
Jasprit Bumrah’s unconventional bowling action makes him one of the most difficult bowlers to be read; he claimed 21 wickets in the 4 tests. The 21 year old wicket keeper batsman Rishabh Pant has cemented his place in the Indian team in a short period of time and finished the test series with the second highest scores achieved. Mayank Agarwal might be the new opening batsman the team needs. After the failures of KL Rahul and Murali Vijay, Mayank Agarwal managed to handle the opening score by scoring 76 runs off 161 balls.
