The world is going through some serious crisis it seems. Where on one hand the Middle East is seething in its own turmoil, France and other European nations are being set alight by the flame of contempt. Where India is through its own internal conflicts, Pakistan is surrounded by forces that do not let it peacefully sleep a wink!
In the midst of all this, the leaders of the nations around are also going gaga?
Call it the eccentric ideas of Trump, the satanic sarcasm of Putin, or the misanthropist and radical sentiments of Roderigo Duterte, everything is almost upside-down.
Roderigo Duterte, the President of Philippines, has made it to the headlines for more reason than one. He was shoved into the global spotlight due to his brutal call to kill drug dealers and traffickers.
He didn?t stop at this though; he went on with his fiery charades, even to the extent of calling the President of the USA names and his views on the South China Sea dispute.
Duterte?s Drug Damnation
During his maiden speech Duterte asked his countrymen to help rid the nation of drugs by killing the drug dealers. He even announced that killing the troublemakers would enable the killer to earn awards.
?Do your duty, and if in the process you kill 1000 persons because you were doing your duty, I will protect you,? he said.
?If you know of any addicts, go ahead and kill them yourself as getting their parents to do it would be too painful.?
?More people will be killed, plenty will be killed until the last pusher is out of the streets. Until the (last) drug manufacturer is killed, we will continue and I will continue.?
His cold blooded statements have bought him a lot of criticisms from people around the world.
Duterte?s Take on Obama
One after the other he?s creating an arena that would make him more infamous. His comments on President Obama could have put him into serious trouble. In response to Obama?s views on Duterte regarding human rights, the latter said-
?You must be respectful. Do not just throw away questions and statements. Son of a whore, I will curse you in that forum,? Duterte told a news conference shortly before flying to Laos to attend the ASEAN summit. ?We will be wallowing in the mud like pigs if you do that to me.?
No doubt the meeting between the leaders was unsurprisingly cancelled.
Critics May Judge Duterte All They Can
For Duterte perhaps, everything that he himself approves of is right, he does not bother himself much about what others have to say about him, and he makes sure that everyone knows about it.
?There are others who have the mental capacity of dogs who lap at the ass of the Americans? referring to how he was being perceived in the west.
He also told reporters: ?I don?t give a shit about anybody observing my behaviour.?
Duterte?s Priesthood Goals
Duterte again had managed to shock people by saying that he had once considered being a priest.
During a gathering of a religious group in Manila, he said: ?I once considered being a priest,? Rappler reported.
The President then took it a step further by saying: ?It?s good I didn?t join the priesthood or else now I would be a homosexual.?
He later did apologize for his vile statements.
In Matters Pertaining to Foreign Affairs
Duterte has not been hesitant about holding back his temperament when it comes to foreign affairs, he even managed to offend China with his views on the South China Sea dispute.
Duterte warned of a bloody confrontation if China dared cross into the Philippines? Economic Exclusive Zone, and insisted he would walk the extra mile for peace.
?But I am sure and I guarantee to them that if they invade us, it will be bloody and we will not give it to them easily. It will be the bones of our soldiers, you can include mine,? he told soldiers at a Manila training camp.
?We will not raise hell now because of the judgment but there will come a time that we will have to do some reckoning about this.?
What remains of him is yet to be seen. Although he did get a lot of people killed in the pursuit of making the country drug free, is killing the only resort? Not to mention, that most of the people who were killed were petty drug peddlers and not leaders of big mafias, then what?s the point?
But irrespective of what the world considers, he?s going to continue with the termination spree. Whether he is as true to his words in other contexts or is it just the over-enthusiasm speaking out of him, is something we have to wait and watch!
